Dezeen Showroom: oversized rounded shapes characterise the Mt Curve Big chair, which forms part of the inaugural furniture collection from US studio BNF.
Like the other pieces in the Mt Curve line, the Big chair is designed to challenge the “linear norms” of fine hardwood furniture with rounded shapes in unexpected places, such as the base of the legs and tubular backrest elements.
It adds an even more playful aspect with its expansive, inviting seat, which was designed for one sitter but is big enough to fit two.
The Big chair is the creation of BNF co-founder Ben Newman, who says the chair’s exaggerated elements nod to ’80s maximalism and the Memphis design movement.
“As you study the chair, other aspects – the shapes, the fabric, the symmetry – draw from the less avant-garde aspects of the art deco movement,” he said. “The merging of these worlds creates a piece that exudes playfulness while remaining sophisticated and refined.”
The Big chair is made to order and customisable in a choice of hardwoods, colours and the customer’s own material. The model shown is in ash hardwood with mohair velvet upholstery.
